Sayonara SunRocket
(Enjoy the video at left as brought to you by YouTube. Upon its removal, please imagine Elton John singing "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me.")
About a year ago, I found a match made in telephony heaven. I paid SunRocket $199 for a year of phone service, plus an extra year for free. There were a few bumps in the road getting started, mainly in porting my number from Time Warner to SunRocket. After we had gotten all that straightened out, we only had minor issues with them, such as sound quality on a few calls, etc.
Then yesterday, I saw this article. Apparently I was mistaken in thinking that the match was made in telephony heaven. Instead, it was made on telephony earth, and now, it's official. SunRocket has died and gone straight to telephony hell. At least that's the fate that many other people, who have been left high and dry by SunRocket's sudden demise, have requested.
Personally, I feel kinda bad about the whole situation. I mean, I was being greedy. I chose SunRocket because not only were the offering me a year of service for $199, but they were throwing a second year in there completely free of charge. I mean, what if that extra $200 would have kept them afloat for another year, ya know? Maybe it would have at least allowed them some time to negotiate a buyout of some type where they could have passed my service on to someone else.
Yeah, fortunately, I've only missed out on two weeks of service that I paid for, and with the fledgling VoIP industry, I don't feel so bad about it. My phone IS starting to die, slowly. Outgoing calls are no longer being processed correctly, but incoming calls work fine. Then again, we had the same problem when they were a fully functioning company, so perhaps it will hang on long enough for my new service to be connected.
I've moved on. Even though I've heard rumors of Packet8 buying all the SunRocket customer base, I went ahead and started getting my AT&T CallVantage set up. Hopefully, I'll be able to keep my number that I've had since I got my own number. I chose AT&T because they're a phone company. They're a huge communications corporation. I don't think they're going out of business anytime soon, and if they do, they'll just be bought by Verizon or Sprint, and it will be business as usual.
I'll keep you updated on the death of our phone service. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation to my phone fund.
Come back for more!

Less hot air isn't always a good thing...
Yesterday I found someone's debit card at the filling station. I called the bank at the number on the back of the card and reported it.
I'm hoping that sooner or later my do-gooding is gonna do some good, because all of these bad things keep happening. :-P
